Vali could not possibly have been more embarrassed and Sigyn could not have been more amused. Yes, it might be cruel, but just because you loved your child with no conditions, it did not mean you could not be spiteful when it came to innocent little situations like this. No one would get hurt by this and some years from now, this would make an awesome story. Sigyn imagined how hilarious it'd be if the little girl and Vali met later in life and got married. Oh, the joy of speaking about their first meeting at every possible family dinner! Sigyn kept quiet for now, of course. Vali stood close to Loki and moreover, it might be a good idea to leave this business to the men. "DO YOU WANT CAKE?", Narvi, who was suprisingly outgoing all of a sudden, asked the lady and supposed mother of the little girl. She looked at the little boy and the mashed cake in his hands. Unsure what to do, she looked at him and then, Sigyn. Sigyn, shook her head and smiled, subtly telling the mother it was okay to refuse. "That is insanely kind of you, Prince Narvi, but I would not want to eat the cake that clearly is destined to graze your tongue," she politely refused. "I have had a lot of cake already!", Narvi proudly explained, finishing his cake by splattering most of it into his face.
Meanwhile, Vali carefully came out of his little hiding place, stepped a step forward. The poor boy was incredibly torn between wanting to be a man and not being intimidated by a girl and being a little boy, that actually could not have been more embarrassed. "Thank you, fair maiden," he stuttered and bowed his head, taking the flower from the girl, "If you were so kind as to tell me your name?" The words spoken so politely sounded very cute coming from the small boy. "Eira! I picked the flower myself!", she said, smiling widely. But this was more than Vali could take. He blinked and looked at his father, as if he were saying Father, you know how to deal with women, please help me.

When Narvi offered his cake to the woman, Loki chuckled a little, though his attention was mostly on Vali. He wanted Vali to step forward and greet the little girl. It would become important for him to learn to do this quickly, for soon he would be expected to greet all manner of people as a prince of Asgard. Public relations was important.
For his part, Vali did well, once he stepped out from behind Loki. He addressed her respectfully, and asked for her name. Yet he did not seem entirely confident, and looked back to Loki for encouragement. Loki stooped down and ruffled Vali's hair.
"Hello, Eira," Loki said pleasantly. "That's a beautiful flower, isn't it, Vali? And a beautiful name." That would hopefully give Vali a bit of an idea where to start. Compliments never failed, unless they were empty; one could not get away with patronizing certain women, like Sigyn.
The little girl seemed quite intelligent herself, and her mother was at least very perceptive. Loki had the same thought as Sigyn had, of course, of what might happen if these two met in the future and married. For now, though, perhaps they could be playmates, if they got along well.

Vali crinkled his nose. "Father!", he exclaimed. Loki could barely have done anything more embarrassing to Vali than tousling his hair. Oh, yes, pinching his cheek or even kissing him would have been even worse, but the little boy felt humiliated enough. "Hello!", Eira exclaimed giddily. She received a little nudge from her mother, upon which she bowed her head, "My lord,", the little girl hurried to add.
"Do you like sword fighting?", Vali asked, because he did not know what else to say. He avoided looking at Eira. Yes, he still felt weird about this. "I always borrow my brother's sword!", Eira said, being entirely giddy. Sigyn took it it was a wooden sword, or so she hoped. The two children engaged in some kind of childlike conversation, Eira being much more straight-forward and talkative than Vali. It was unbearably cute.
"What is your name, maiden," Sigyn asked, her hand once more busy with keeping the smeared Narvi off her dress. "Astrid, daughter of Mads, wife of Rigur, my lady,", Astrid said. Rigur was part of the royal guard, Sigyn had never had a thorough conversation with him, but she knew his face. "Oh, how pleasant! You and Eira should come to court sometime and be sure to bring her little sword. What do you think, my lord," Sigyn turned to Loki. She thought this was a splendid idea, for Vali and Eira seemed to be getting along just fine.

The girl and her mother were polite and sociable, and actually quite likable. Loki watched Vali chat with Eira, while ruffling the messy Narvi's hair as well.
He chuckled as the girl confessed to borrowing her brother's sword. Another Sigyn in the making. He hoped his boys would grow up to value character above all else, and that they would find a lady of many talents more interesting than one who sat home and did her chores politely all day. If so, little would make him prouder. Young Eira had already won a step towards Loki's good graces; an admirable feat for a girl, the daughter of a guard.
"Yes, most certainly," Loki added as Sigyn prompted him for a response. He was glad Vali might have a little friend to play with. Borrowing a cloth from a nearby vendor, he knelt down and wiped Narvi's hands and face clean, not caring who saw him do this. Narvi was his son, and he would care for him. A prince should not walk around with cake on his face, as adorable as it may be.
"Perhaps you would join us in exploring the fair?" he further suggested, not knowing whether Sigyn would appreciate this or prefer that they have their own family time. In any case, the women could work it out. Loki's job was to be polite and remain on his best behavior. That alone was something of a challenge.

"I gladly will," Astrid said, "Thank you kindly, my lady, my lord." The woman could not hide her smile as she looked at her prince and princess and then, at Vali and Eira. Vali seemed to be warming up a little bit, even though Eira remained the talkative one. It was quite adorable. Actually, Astrid held her breath for a moment, as she saw how Loki was taking care of his little son. Sigyn was used to Loki being that caring around his boys, but she had seen differently. She had seen warriors that would not move their hands at all, when it came to their children. At least, not in public. Had Loki ever demanded this particular expression of gender roles, Sigyn would most likely have scolded him big time in private, but eventually done as he wished until he'd change his mind. However, Loki had been quite open from the start and oblivious to most gazes he got. It was wonderful how he took care of what needed to be taken care of. Already, Narvi and VAli had it better than Loki or Sigyn had had it, growing up.
"Yes, if you so wish! It'd be a pity to make the two new friends part," Sigyn agreed with Loki. Astrid, whose husband was indeed on duty, smiled yet again and inclined her head. "I absolutely agree," she said. That was when Narvi tripped on his own feet and fell head first into the grass. He had everyone's shared attention, short of Vali and his new friend Eira. Narvi stared his mother in the eye and then, his father. Obviously, the little one was pondering whether to cry or not. "Nothing happened, Narvi," Sigyn said, after a short moment of scanning her son, "Did it?" Narvi pulled a face and lifted his hands. "I have grass on my hands," he complained, still trying to assess whether this was a reason to cry.

At first, when Sigyn had been pregnant with Vali, Loki had thought he would indeed be that typical father, affectionate but somewhat distant, especially in public. There was nothing wrong with that, he had figured. His father had made many mistakes, but being overly showy in public had not been one of them. Or so had he felt at the time.
But then Vali had been born, and, unlike most fathers, Loki had chosen to remain at Sigyn's side throughout the birth, had witnessed the miracle of Vali's arrival. Since he first laid eyes on the baby boy, Loki had been unable to refrain from being attentive and protective, even in public. And so it had come to pass that he tended to be much more proactive about taking care of his sons. By now, it was second nature to him, and he never thought of it until he got those odd stares from others. Everyone seemed to expect him to be Loki the trickster or Loki the warrior, not Loki the sentimental father.
Fortunately, Astrid did not give him an "odd" look as he tended to Narvi, but she looked surprised nonetheless. It was decided that they would have a look around the fair together, Then Narvi tripped, and looked up at his parents with the most woeful expression. Loki was sure the little boy would soon burst into tears. "It's okay, Narvi," Loki said, stooping down to brush Narvi's little hands clean. "See, it is all gone away now."
He picked up Narvi to carry him for awhile, at least until the danger of crying was past. "Where shall we journey next? Perhaps we should let Eira pick this time," he suggested, glancing from his boys to Sigyn to Astrid to Eira.

Narvi put his head against Loki's shoulder, fumbled with his father's armor and stared at Astrid. This day was quite exhausting for the little boy. Narvi was exposed to a million different impressions, there were lots of people around and since he was a Prince of Asgard, he even got more attention than a regular three-year-old. It was not a big surprise his nerves were quite tense. The world was a safer, better place on his father's arm. Narvi still looked slightly miserable, but more relaxed than before.
Eira looked up, interrupted her conversation with Vali when she heard her name, big eyes staring at Loki. She looked particularly small next to the tall prince. The little girl looked at her mother then, possibly double-checking whether it was okay to speak, to make a request. Astrid nodded. It'd be rude to disregard Loki's proposal.
"Can we go to Alfheim?" she asked, looking from Astrid to Loki and to Sigyn. "Of course," Sigyn said, patting Eira's hair once. "There are light elves in Alfheim!", Vali hurried to explain. "I know! I bet they are very beautiful!", Eira replied and immediately, the two of them were enganging in a conversation. The lovely group got going, Sigyn caught up with Astrid, while Loki was carrying Narvi around. "For how long have you been married, if I may ask?", Sigyn said. "Oh, only nine years so far. Surely nothing compared your own marriage.", Astrid answered politely, giving Sigyn a little smile. "It's not a competition," Sigyn smiled back. "It surely is not," Astrid said, blushing slightly, "I hope I will be as happy as you and the prince seem to be after all those years. I am positive it will turn out that way." Sigyn kept a pokerface. It sounded as though Astrid had not gotten married for love. "It takes work," Sigyn joked, grinning as she briefly looked over her shoulder, at Loki.
Narvi was knocking on Loki's armor every now and then, as though it were a musical instrument. "Father did your armor grow as you grew or was it too big for you once oooooor were you always so big?", the little boy mused.
Upon seeing the booth representing Alfheim, Vali and Eira started to run a little faster. "It is alright, Vali, go ahead," Sigyn nodded. And off they went.

The decision to go to Alfheim was a sound one, Loki thought, especially after having just come from the generally less pleasant Jotunheim. Alfheim was considered a land of beauty and mystery, and usually hailed as one of the better realms to travel to. Over his thousands of years of life, Loki had seen all the realms in one way or another, and recalled that the Alfheim represented at the fair was a fun one for children to play around in.
With that in mind, Loki was tempted to tell Narvi that his armor did grow, or something else that would sound magical. The truth was far less impressive, as with anything else through the eyes of a child. "I once was tiny, like you," he said, booping Narvi's nose lightly. "When I came of age, my first suit of armor was made for me, and since then, as I have grown, new armor has been made to fit me." With a chuckle, he added, "But I have been this big for a long, long, loooong time."
Indeed, when he looked back on growing up, he felt almost exhausted, for it had been innumerable years since then. But he smiled and continued to carry Narvi, glancing back at the women occasionally. He could hear them well, but chose not to interrupt them.
As they neared their destination, Vali and Eira looked about ready to take off. With Sigyn's permission, they went running into the well-decorated area, lined with fauna and colorful flowers and a mystic sort of scent. Here there would be jewelry and perfumes and, of course, more food. Giving a nod here and there to the vendors and actors, Loki made his way to one of the stands, and chose a beautiful necklace inlaid with sapphires and pearls. After putting Narvi down and giving the boy his helmet, he placed the necklace against Sigyn's neck and admired both. "It brings out the blue of your eyes," he noted.

Narvi knocked his little fist on Loki's armor once more. "Am I too small to get armor of my own?", he asked, his voice full of doubt and a frown on his face. The little one seemed to be knowing the answer already.
As soon as they had entered the location, Vali and Eira took off. They were playing with some actors dressed as elves, this time it was not a fight, but something more of a dance. Eira did well, whereas Vali was a little stiff. He'd prefer fighting instead of dancing, but on the other hand, he seemed to like watching Eira prance and pirouette. How very cute. Sigyn and Astrid had just finished their conversation, when Loki put Narvi down and selected a necklace for his wife.
Astrid stepped aside a little bit, feeling as if she had just invaded a private moment, bent down to Narvi, who had actually put Loki's helmet on ground to lean on it. The huge metal piece was too heavy and big for the little boy to carry. Sigyn had not noticed Narvi using the helmet as a piece of furniture, otherwise she would have objected. The helmet was a piece of royal armor, something honorable. For now, her gaze was on the necklace her husband was presenting to her. Sigyn smiled with her lips pursed, met Loki's gaze. "Do you like it?", she asked, almost mischievously, touching the material with her fingertips. She did not need any more jewellery, but the necklace was indeed quite pretty. She'd guess that maybe - just maybe - someone was imagining nothing but that necklace on her body. No thought she'd blame him for.

The pout Narvi wore almost made Loki wish to make him a suit of armor just because, but he knew that was silly. "Soon you will be big enough for your own official outfit, and then, in time, your own armor. Do not rush it, my son. These days are precious," he explained, though he doubted Narvi would believe or care about the last part.
He had set Narvi down with the helmet; as he wore it so often, and being as strong as he was, he had not thought it would be too heavy for the little boy. Fortunately Astrid tended to Narvi as Loki shared the necklace with Sigyn. It was indeed beautiful, and in addition to bringing out her eyes, would also match many of her dresses well. Not that she needed to be also wearing a dress as she wore the necklace…. Perhaps she would wear it for him tonight, after all the festivities had passed and they were left alone to make all the love they craved.
Of course, he realized she did not need the necklace. He would be remiss if she wanted for anything. But it was beautiful, and he wanted to see her wear it. "Yes," he said softly, in response to her question. He clasped the jewelry around her neck, and could not help brushing his lips against her skin for a moment before he stepped back. Satisfied with what he saw, he paid the jeweler out of his own pocket, while complimenting the jeweler on his craftsmanship. Such a compliment was seldom expected from Loki, and it did make the man a bit flustered, but he received the comments with all the grace due a prince.
Smiling, Loki turned and watched Vali and Eira dance with the "elves," noting Vali's stiffness. Perhaps it would soon be time for the boy to learn to dance. Not only was ballroom dancing expected of a prince, but it also, in Loki's experience, helped a warrior's grace and agility. Glancing down, he saw Astrid and Narvi with the helmet; Astrid doing her best to keep it respectfully clean. "Thank you," Loki said with a laugh, now realizing his folly in having left the helmet in the care of the little boy.
He picked up the helmet and took Narvi;s hand, and pointed him in the direction of the dancers. "Do you want to dance with them?" he asked, encouraging him. Narvi's steps would be clumsy if he danced, but it would be fun, and a beautiful sight.
