One of the many upsides to Astaire's work was his ability to travel. Sometimes it was for research, sometimes for teaching. This trip was a mix of both. Astaire had been invited by a friend to New Mexico State University to give a lecture on the treatment of unusual disorders. While he was there, he would also give his opinion on a few cases. His friend had promised that they were interesting ones.
Of course, he could hardly think about interesting cases without thinking about Kimi. The young woman he had treated in Japan, as part of his former life, had been an unsolvable case, right up until her death. Then he had realized that she had not been sick at all, but something else, something he happened to be as well. The word "mutant" had not come into his vocabulary until the day he met Emma Frost, but that was what the case had been after all.
He half-expected that this was the same deal. From what his friend had told him, the subjects had strange body makeups, and a few could not be tested traditionally. One such case could not be x-rayed, though she appeared to be in perfect health. Astaire was especially curious about that one. It suggested an immunity to radiation, with which his doctor friend agreed. Astaire would get to look on each patient as a consultant, and offer his opinion in private.
"She is one of my favorites," the doctor explained to Astaire as they walked down the hall to the room in which the patient waited. "She's very kind and enthusiastic. Never seems to have a bad word to say about anyone." That was quite the opposite of what Astaire was, but he said nothing, just nodded. It was his job to diagnose, not to judge.
"I'll introduce you to her," the doctor said, as they reached the door and the doctor turned the knob. Brushing off his labcoat, which he had exchanged his suit jacket for, Astaire followed the doctor into the room quietly, offering the woman a smile as he waited not far from the door, which he had closed silently behind them.
