It was true, Loki did want a child to carry on his name. Not a bastard, but a child with the woman he loved. No other arrangement would do. If Sigyn could not provide that, then he would simply have to live with it. She was more important to him than his lineage. His brother would rule, not he; as such, the need for an heir was lesser for him. He could afford to spare his wife the pain of another botched birth - or worse, the pain of him going to another woman for a child.
Also, secretly, he sometimes thought it might be better not to pass on his apparently bad genes again. Or perhaps it was his fairly extensive use of black magic that tainted everything he brought to life. Whatever the case, his children never turned out as he hoped, and he had begun to wonder whether Sigyn wasn't on to something with her reluctance to have any more of them.
She was curled up beside him as she made her confession, and he wrapped an arm around her, leaned his head against hers. What could he say to reassure her?
"Sigyn, you have given me all the greatest joys of my life - our two sons, and yourself. They were not with us for long, but they made us happy when they were. And you have been with me through everything." She had stayed by his side and put up with his antics than he had expected her to. He had always imagined he would go through wives like clothes, as each one got fed up with him. But Sigyn had been truly loyal.
"When we lost them, you responded as a mother should have. You grieved. I did not want you to be concerned about me, I just wanted you to make it through, no matter what it meant you had to do. And you did. We did." He hugged her closer. "Though days like this one are difficult, we've learned to survive them. That is all I could ever ask of you."

Sigyn had indeed been loyal. But loyalty was just the natural consequence of something else: Love. It had been - and it was - her love for him that made her stay. Although millenia had passed, Sigyn's love for him had not decreased. It had only grown and turned into the most profound, deep and precious thing she had ever experienced. Every morning when she woke up, the first thing she wanted to do was kiss him. Every night when she went to bed, she wanted the same. She still had butterflies in her stomach every now and then and her body had never stopped aching for his touch. Sigyn knew she had made the right choice all those years ago. She had seen women maintaining marriages for appearance and because it was the way it goes. Sigyn loved. It was the greatest gift of all times.
No matter what happened, she'd stay with him, even if it meant her death.
When he hugged her closer, she snuggled against his side. She was pulling her robe in place. What did it even matter, he knew her naked body better than she did, so she thought. Sigyn winced upon hearing his words. How could display of love be so bittersweet, hurt and warm her heart at the same time? Because it was about her boys. Because it was about her failures. "Something is not right with me, Loki," she whispered, her voice shaking. Sigyn was not afraid often, she rarely cried. Of course, she had her weak moments and Loki knew exactly what her weaknesses were. Not things like skittles, those were not important. But her children, her marriage, himself. "You fathered children before we married. They all lived. It is obviously me." These days, she was not so worried about his faithfulness anymore. It had been ages ever since he had not been faithful, back then, and they had not even been married. She wanted to make him happy, raise a child that'd live with him. She wanted this for him and also, for herself. Sigyn was capable of magic, black magic by now even - though she didn't make use of this too often. She was a great fighter, a noble princess.
But she was not a mother. Something was wrong.

Spending eternity with the same person should have been a bore for Loki. It was in his nature that he should constantly seek new challenges, new games, new thrills. He was not easily placated. Yet Sigyn had lasted all this time, and he could not imagine being without her. She kept him interested; it felt as though he were still courting her, still trying to win her. Yet there was something between them that Loki had never seen before. When she was upset, so was he. When she cried, he felt it. When she was happy, it made him ecstatic. So complete was his fall for her that he sometimes had trouble finding where he stopped and she began.
There could be nothing wrong with her. If there was a problem, it was with him. He stroked her hair gently. "They lived - a serpent, a wolf, and an eight-legged horse. As well as a daughter who hates me. One out of four is not a good score, Sigyn." There was a bit of teasing to his tone, perhaps to hide the fact that he was being utterly serious.
"Even if there was something wrong with you, it would change nothing. We would cope with it." He would not let her feel poorly about herself over something like this, especially since he did not think it was accurate. Maybe it was both of them. Maybe somehow, by some cruel twist, the way they fit together so perfectly in every other way did not translate to their genes fitting perfectly to make a baby.
He wanted them to try again, to just see whether another try would work. But he did not want to see her hurt again the way she had when they had lost Narvi. And he knew better than to suggest it now, after the words they had thrown at each other earlier. They had been angry, but there had been a little truth to those words, for both of them.
"It could be just the two of us, traveling the realms and getting into adventures. Would you think well of that?" Perhaps it would be the best that way, as well. A life at home suited neither of them. They both needed to be out among the world, together. Keeping their minds off the past, taking with them only what they wanted to remember.

Sigyn detached herself from his embrace and sat on her knees, so she could face him properly. Did he think so poorly of the children he had created? "So what they do not share your shape? They are yours nonetheless and they are beautiful. Just consider what a beautiful stallion Sleipnir is! How proud Hela is! I never urged you to be a father to them, but don't put them down, Loki.", she pleaded, without reprimanding him. Yes, Sigyn was defensive about the children he had with others than her. She was not spiteful they lived and her sons had not. It was not their fault. Hela avoided Loki and Sigyn alike, no one really knew where Fenrir was most of the times. But Sigyn saw Sleipnir on a regular basis, when she was at the stables. She knew, the horse knew who she was. He had never thrown a tantrum or attacked her. On the contrary. Sigyn would never think about actually riding him, that just felt wrong. But sometimes, she just sat with him, even talked to him. The horse did not reply in words, but in gestures. Maybe, to some extent, she felt like she'd have to make up for his father's absence.
She dropped her head. Yes. There was something wrong with her and it didn't seem like they could do anything about it. Little did she know about the true reasons, Loki didn't, either. She watched her hands in her lap for a moment, but looked up as he suggested what they were already doing. Sigyn gathered her robe and climbed into his lap, straddling him. Her hands cupped his face. Her gaze warm and affectionate, she locked it with his. "My love, I will always think well of anything that includes you. I will never in my long life cease to crave to have your children, raise them with you and be a mother. But if that is not what fate holds for us, then so be it. I will not leave your side. I will be where you are. You're what I want. And while we will be traveling the realms and while I'll put up with your antics,-" she snickered quietly, "We will cherish the memory of ours sons and keep them in our hearts. They'll be with us forever." Then, it happened. The burden of the day, the neverending grief, the memories haunting her like ghosts, they weighed too heavily on her. At first, it were just a couple of simple tears. But they turned into a river as Sigyn dropped her head into the curve of Loki's neck and let it out. This had been due for long and most likely, it wouldn't happen again for decades.

There was very little that could make Loki ashamed, but Sigyn's words about his children did the trick. He had never been proud of his children, no. Poor Sleipnir especially, due to the circumstances of his birth. Loki, however, had wanted children more in his image. It was clearly possible; Narvi and Vali had been normal, and beautiful. But they had been lost. Loki understood that he should be happy with the children he had created, but… it was difficult, and he did not know why. Difficult to accept that he could have living, strong, even powerful children, but not normal sons.
"You are right," he conceded, his eyes on the fire. "I should appreciate them more." He hardly knew where to start with that. Should he visit them more, bring them presents? Did they even want him in their lives?
He wrapped his arms around her as she sat in his lap, looked into her eyes as she gazed into his. Her words, so sincere, made him feel like a fool for his earlier behavior and lucky that she had been patient and understanding, not only in this, but always. And she would always be with him.
Then she began to cry. He held her close, even as she cried into his shoulder. Was this what he had wanted, for her to cry? If it would relieve her pain, then yes, it was exactly what he had wanted. "We will carry them with us," he said softly. "We'll never forget them…." His words broke off, and he closed his eyes, fighting back the emotions that welled to the surface, threatened to overcome him.
"I miss them, Sigyn," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I miss them so much."

All of this had not happened in order to make him come out of his shell. Even if Sigyn would scheme these days, she never schemed against Loki, at least not when it was about serious things. Using a few unruly measures in order to make him feed her cake was something entirely different. But somehow, her revelation was leading to his own. Another aspect of how much they were one. What happened to Loki affected Sigyn and vice versa. As Sigyn let her tears flow into his skin, Loki's boundaries crumbled. His voice was now a whisper. Hard to believe this was the same man that had claimed to have shut out his sons earlier. Hard to believe he had truly stopped loving them.
Sigyn's trembles ceased as she detected that hint of fragility in his voice. Loki was not a fragile man. He was wicked and a trickster, strong, cocky and smart. No one saw this side of him, but Sigyn. If she told anyone about this version of him, they'd probably think she was lying. Sometimes, Sigyn would share tiny stories with Greta. Nothing severe, she surely would not tell her about this particular moment. But Greta had claimed to be incapable of imagining Loki pinning Sigyn to the bed in order to try and tickle her, punishment for her big mouth. Well, it was Siygns prerogative and nobody's business.
She bent back, so she could look at him, her eyes glossy now. First thing was first, so she cupped his face and kissed him once, twice, let her lips linger. Eventually, her forehead came to rest against his. "They adored you, Loki. Both of them. You were the best father they could have had. Watching you with your sons was the greatest joy I have ever been blessed with. Never doubt that they loved you without conditions.", she whispered against his face. She knew Loki had been walking on eggshells about his own fatherhood. He needed to know that he had succeeded better than anyone could have.

There was so much going on within Loki that he could not have defined it all if he had tried. Pain, anger and hurt over the way his father treated him, jealousy of his brother and frustration with that, confusion over it all - more negativity than many hearts could handle. But, at his core, he loved Sigyn, and it was possible he still harbored some love for his sons there was well.
The numbness had served him well. It had indeed closed him off, had kept him from feeling the immense pain that might have overwhelmed him. But now - at least for the moment - he no longer needed it. He was safe here with only Sigyn to watch him, Sigyn, who never judged him. He could be open here. And so he was.
She cried in his arms, and he felt a pain stab at him as though he were crying as much as she was. Her pain was his, and his hers. Even if they had not been grieving over the same thing, they would have felt it in each other. That was just how close they had become.
She kissed him twice, and he felt her linger there, just as he did. Her words were encouraging, yet they broke his heart. What would he not give for another chance with them, another chance to be the father he wanted to be! Perhaps then he would see what Sigyn had seen. He would not have been afraid. He would have done everything better.
"Please…." He did not know what it was he was asking for, or even if he was asking it of her. He lowered his head; a tear was falling from each of his eyes. It was his turn to bury his face in her neck. He hated crying. He had not cried since he was a little boy, and it would likely not happen again. But to imagine that he had succeeded with his sons… only to have them taken away… was too much for him to bear.
After a bit, he raised his head and looked at her, unsmiling. Turning her gently, he laid her out lengthwise on the sofa, and, leaning in, kissed her slowly, passionately, one finger drawing a line along her throat and down her chest.
"I'm so sorry," he murmured without removing his lips from hers. "I'm so sorry."

During all this time they had been together, Sigyn could recollect only very few occasions when Loki had cried. It simply did not happen. Possibly, they were not so different when it came to their feelings. They did open up to one another, but they preferred to vent by fighting and turning angry and stubborn, rather than cry. Today, everything was possible. And at exact this day one year from now, it'd be again. Nobody would learn about his tears. It were Sigyn's to behold. And moreover, it were Sigyn's to wipe away. For now, she just held his head against her neck, rested her lips against his hair. "Shh, my love,", Sigyn whispered, kissing his hair a couple of times. There was no shame in his tears. He was a father who had lost two sons. Moreover, he was a father who had a complicated relationship with his own father, a competitive one with his brother. Loki was frustrated about his own status as a son and brother, Sigyn knew that. She had an idea how deep it went, because she knew Loki.
No matter whether he was not Odin's favoured son, he was her favoured person. And he'd always be.
She was about to hold his face and kiss him again, when he skillfully and gently turned her around and put her on the couch, leaned in and kissed her. The kiss was full of passion, but also full of sorrow. It took her breath away on so many levels. Sigyn turned hungry, almost desperate all of a sudden, lifted her head to meet his lips eagerly, while she was hooking one arm around his neck and undid her robe with her other hand. "Love me," she whispered into his mouth.
This was the saddest of days for them. And they'd get through it however they pleased. Sigyn was not judging him and he was not judging her. They supported each other. They'd always do.

Was this wrong? Was it wrong of him to want her so badly, right now, when what she needed was to be comforted? Loki was a selfish bastard sometimes - often - but this line was one he was not certain he wanted to cross. She was grieving. So was he. Yet this felt more right than his tears, and much more right than his earlier anger and numbness.
He still felt the tears on his face as he kissed her. She welcomed his kiss, and he felt himself give in, especially once he heard her whisper. His hands slipped around the fabric of her robe, pushing it aside to touch her skin.
"Always," he murmured just before his lips met the base of her neck.
-----
His head was resting against hers, his arm casually tossed over her stomach He could feel the rise and fall of her breathing, almost in time with his. He wondered idly whether their hearts were beating in time. It felt as though they should be. He twined a lock of her hair around his finger, gazing at her. She seemed to be on the verge of sleep, but he was not sure.
Night had long since fallen, and the room was quiet. The entire palace felt still. Surely it was not late enough for everyone to have gone to sleep. Perhaps it was that everyone on their wing had left them alone for the day, and he had not properly noticed it until now.
Her words still rang in his mind. They had loved him. And he had loved them, was beginning to suspect he still did. He loved them unconditionally. But what of his other children? The limited love he had for them certainly had conditions.
"Is it possible that I love you more than I did on the day we exchanged vows? I didn't think it possible then, but somehow I keep falling deeper in love with you." He pressed a kiss to her cheek, not expecting an answer. It was easier for him to talk like this, when nothing he said mattered. He was still a little loopy, and falling asleep as well.
"Tomorrow will be better. We will face the world again, refreshed and renewed. We could even go out. Would you like that, my love?" He snuggled against her, still not expecting a response. He kissed her affectionately, as exhaustion set in again. Perhaps he would simply sleep the next day away.

All was fair in love and war. If Loki and Sigyn thought this the right way to battle their grief, then so be it. No one was here to judge them anyway, no one to tell them what to do. It was just them. And so, Sigyn wrapped her arms around his shoulders as he sunk down on her.
----
Sigyn and Loki lay intertwined on the couch still. It was silly, the greatest bed in the nine realms was waiting for them in the next room. Yet neither of them cared to move over. It was just too comfortable. Sigyn did not have teleportation in her powers anyway and walking by herself seemed quite unappealing at this moment. She brushed her arm over Loki's back, fingertips tracing the lines of his muscles. She smiled, struggling to keep her eyes closed. She did not give him an answer for his words did not require one. The feeling was absolutely mutual. He knew that, did he not? She turned, so she'd lie on her site and could snuggle against him even more, receiving that kiss. Sigyn wasn't asleep yet, but she was crinkling her nose quite a lot. He knew her well enough to know that she'd fall into a deep sleep soon enough. He had made her work out this day and manage to allow herself to doze off. That was more than she could ask for. "I cannot go with you tomorrow, my love. I promised your mother to help her sew a new gown," Sigyn explained. Her and Frigga had made a habit out of meeting in order to sew. The queen had not been ashamed to admit that Sigyn was more skilled with this task than herself. Mostly, Frigga's minions had taken care of her attires, until her daughter-in-law had infected her with her enthusiasm about the task. "Meet me at dusk by the lake," she murmured. Yes, she required a secret date. She still was like this, meeting him in 'secret' every now and then. Tomorrow seemed a good day for that.
"Teleport us to bed, please?", Sigyn required.
A moment after he did so, she was falling asleep against Loki.

Nothing made him feel as whole as when he was joined with her. Everything was washed away, all the sadness and anger and pain, leaving nothing but her. She was all he really needed. There was much he wanted from life, but without her, it was all rather pointless. He often thought that she was an extension of him, or he of her. Whichever the case, he could not survive without her.
He nodded a bit as she told him about her plans for the next day. He was immensely glad she and his mother had gotten along so well, and that they had sewing to share as a hobby. The fact that Sigyn had gotten Frigga back into sewing made him proud, in an odd way. So he always approved of their time together. Not that the two women needed his approval.
She instructed him to meet her by the lake afterwards. "I will be there," he promised. There were some habits they had not broken, and the secret date was one of his favorites. He had no idea what to expect. Usually, he was no fan of surprises, but he trusted Sigyn, and she knew him well enough to understand what he did and did not like.
He gathered a bit of energy and teleported them onto the far more spacious bed. Brushing his hand along her hair, he felt her relax against him. "Good night, my love," he said softly before closing his eyes and drifting off into sleep.
The day was done. They had survived.
-----
The following day arrived like any other. Their wing of the palace was bustling with activity again. He spent the morning outside, as he had been indoors for most of the previous day. It was a nice day, and a welcome change. Somewhat inspired, around midday he collected a few books and took them out to the stables.
The stables were mostly empty, and he settled in across from Sleipnir. The time flew by as he read the horse some stories, and soon it was an hour before dusk would settle in. Returning to the palace, he made sure he was still presentable, then rode out to the lake.

When she woke the next morning, the grief she had felt was not lying so heavily on her anymore. She kissed Loki good morning like she always did, tempted to roll on top of him and repeat what they had done the night before, just with less sorrow and more fun. However, Sigyn had a date to attend to. Frigga was quite understanding, if Sigyn had been late, she would not have scolded her. Regardless, Sigyn was perfectly groomed and absolutely on time. The queen did not ask her about the previous day. She knew better than to tear open that wound. Sometimes, Sigyn felt bad. After all, Frigga had lost her grandsons, too. However, they were quickly into their sewing and chatting. Servants brought them a light lunch and a more gracious dinner. Time was passing by fast when you were busy stitching embroideries on thick, golden fabric. They were not close to being done when Sigyn departed in the evening. She changed into more suitable clothes for the lake, a thicker dress and her green cape. Sigyn had a particular errand to run, before she was headed for the lake. She was a little early, actually. When night was falling, she had already hidden in the bushes close to the lake, so she could witness Loki approaching without being seen. And he did. When he finally dismounted, Sigyn shh-d a couple of times. "Loki!", she whispered and snickered. When she ran from the bushes, the leaves were shaking, the last sign indicating her hiding spot. She was not running towards him. She was running away, giggling. He'd get the hint. After a moment of running, she had arrived at her favourite clearing. Sigyn was hiding behind a tree, but she made sure to be seen. A cheeky smile was on her face. Her eyes, glistening golden, where clearly visible in the pale moonlight. Leaves were falling, paving the way towards her. A thing she had caused with her magic. This was the total opposite of the day before. And absolutely necessary.

For most of the day, Loki had looked forward to the evening. He knew not what Sigyn might have planned, only that she wanted to see him, and that was good enough for him. He rode out to the lake just as dusk fell, dressed comfortably for the night. The way he left the grounds without announcing his intentions, the way he set out for a secret place, made him feel as though he were going on a personal adventure, in all the best of ways.
He slowed his horse and then dismounted, his gaze sweeping the forest. There was no sign of her, but he could feel her presence. Soon he heard her calling to him in a playful whisper. After a step in her direction, she rushed out, giggling as she ran. Amused and curious, he followed her, straining to see well in the fading light.
She hid herself very obviously behind a tree, and grinned at him. He laughed, following the trail of leaves. He could see her eyes glowing, and knew it was her magic at work. Had she been planning this all this time? He had never doubted that he had married a wonderfully cunning woman, but he enjoyed seeing it in action every time.
"My lady of the forest," he called out as he approached her tree, "I am searching for my wife, a most beautiful and intriguing woman, with eyes as deep and vast as the ocean, and lips as soft as clouds. Please tell me, have you seen such a woman?"

Sigyn still enjoyed goofy games like this. Although being thousands of years old, she was still in touch with her inner child sometimes. Besides, there was a good chance that goofing around would turn into mindless love making with Loki. You had to be creative if you were sleeping with the same person for millenia. The night air was so refreshing, the scent of the forest almost cleaned her nostrils and mind. Of course, Loki was playing along.
Sigyn but her lip as she stepped forward, leaving her useless hiding spot. She kept the hood of her cape deep in her face and did not come very close. She kept her distance. After all, she was a lady of the forest and he was a prince and a god. Who knew whether he was up to good with her! "That wife of yours must be a lie as there are no such women that fit your description, my lord. Perchance, you have hit your head quite hard?", she said in a very sincere, almost sinister voice as the glow of her eyes brigthened. The trees seemed to be coming to life, strangely, wood creaking, limbs moving. A horde of fireflies were pirouetting around Sigyn's had, flying towards Loki. They illuminated his face, making him look like an illusion, a dream of beauty.
"You should retreat to your pretty palace, where the most honorable maidens of Asgard stand in line, waiting for you. I am sure you will make a great pick. The forest is not safe." In fact, Sigyn had not planned this. But she played along. And so, a tendril grew from the ground, wrapped itself around Loki's ankle and held him in place.

In his childhood, Loki had often played little games with his friends, running around pretending to be great warriors battling invisible foes. They had never been impressed by his skills in magic, but he had found it amusing for himself. Now he found himself in such a game, where magic was the standard, with a woman who appreciated him for what he was.
They were surrounded by magic, with fireflies circling overhead, giving them light in the growing dark. She played her part well, a true lady of the forest as the world around them seemed to come to life. "Perhaps she is but a dream, O lady of the forest, but I cannot stop until I find her."
He felt the tendril wrap around his ankle. "What mischief is this? It seems I am trapped." He could not help smiling a bit at her cleverness. Her skills had grown over time, due to her own dedication and partly due to his assistance. He had taught her much, including some of the dark arts, but this magic had no darkness to it. It drew its potency from love, and it was well known that love's magic could defeat all others, such was its power.
Raising his hands, palms up, he created a gentle wind that blew her toward him. When she was close enough, he ran a finger along her jawline, a touch that slowly faded just as a set of arms wrapped around her waist from behind and he disappeared from view; the real Loki was now behind her, his chin resting in the crook of her neck.
"The forest may be dangerous, my lady, but so am I." The words were whispered across her ear, as softly as though they were carried on the wind. There was nothing dark or menacing about them, though; if anything, they were almost gentle. As gentle as his touch as he began to pull her hood back, to finally reveal her face.
